Then she opened the upper cabinet.
The coffee filters were on the highest shelf.
She stretched.
Missed.
Stretched again.
Andrew began to rise from his chair.
Kayla pointed at him without looking around.
“Sit.”
He slowly lowered himself back into the chair.
“I was only going to help.”
“I know. But I can reach them.”
She dragged a kitchen chair across the floor, climbed onto it, and took the filters down herself.
When she stepped back onto the floor, she caught me smiling.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She glanced at the chair, then at the coffee filters in her hand.
A small grin appeared on her face.
“See? I’m learning to stand on my own two feet.”
Andrew lifted his mug.
“Literally.”
Kayla rolled her eyes.
I laughed.
And this time, the laughter didn’t hide any anger.
It was simply laughter.
