She nodded again.
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
This time, she looked directly at me.
“Yes.”
When we went inside, Andrew was in the living room folding laundry.
He looked up when we entered.
“How was the room?”
“Nice,” Kayla said.
“Good.”
He returned to folding a T-shirt.
Kayla stood in the doorway for a moment.
Then she cleared her throat.
“Andrew?”
He looked up again.
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
He put the shirt down.
She took a breath.
“I’m sorry I kept putting you in uncomfortable situations. I’m sorry I ignored Amanda when she asked me to stop. And I’m sorry I acted like your marriage was something I could use to prove a point about mine.”
Andrew was quiet for a moment.
Then he nodded.
“Thank you for saying that.”
She looked relieved, but not completely.
“I wasn’t actually trying to steal you away from my sister.”
Andrew glanced at me, then back at her.
