“Then why wasn’t it enough when I asked you to stop?”
She locked her phone and placed it in her lap.
For a while, I thought she wouldn’t answer.
Then she whispered, “Because Eric didn’t cheat on me.”
I glanced at her.
“What?”
“He didn’t cheat. He didn’t hit me. He didn’t steal from me. There wasn’t another woman.”
Her voice sounded different now.
Smaller.
Less certain.
“He just said he didn’t want our life anymore.”
The traffic light ahead turned red.
I stopped the car.
“Kayla…”
“Six years, Amanda.”
She stared through the windshield.
“Six years of living together. Six years of planning holidays and talking about marriage and arguing about what color to paint the living room. Six years of thinking I knew exactly where I belonged.”
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
“And then one day, he looked at me and said he didn’t want it anymore.”
