She turned to me.

“So you’re taking his side?”

“No. I’m taking the side of having a home where everyone respects one another.”

She shook her head.

“I cannot believe this.”

I moved the toast away from the hot pan.

“Kayla, I love you. You know that. But I won’t pretend that everything is fine just because you’re going through a difficult time.”

She pulled the towel tighter around herself.

“So that’s it? You’re giving me a deadline?”

“I’m giving us a plan.”

“Same thing.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Andrew picked up his coffee.

“The rooms are suggestions, not orders. Nobody is forcing you to sign anything today.”

“Then why show me?”

“Because you’ve been here for two weeks, and we haven’t discussed what happens next. That’s not fair to you, either.”

Kayla looked at him suspiciously.

“You really expect me to believe this has nothing to do with me trying to tempt you?”
