Eliza looked at me.
“I wish I had someone like him.”
At the time, I didn’t think much of it.
She had just left a bad marriage. Of course seeing someone else’s marriage functioning normally would hit a nerve.
“Are you going somewhere?”
The next day, she came over in a fitted blue dress, heels, and full makeup.
“Wow.”
She smiled.
“What?”
“Are you going somewhere?”
“Maybe I just wanted to feel pretty.”
“No.”
“Date?”
“No.”
She walked past me.
“Maybe I just wanted to feel pretty.”
“Is Andrew home?”
Andrew was working from home upstairs.
I didn’t think about that until Eliza glanced toward the hallway.
“Is Andrew home?”
“Yeah.”
Her smile changed slightly.
“That didn’t sound like a joke.”
“Maybe I wanted Andrew to notice me, too.”
I turned around.
“What?”
She laughed.
“Oh, relax.”
“Come on. If something ever happened to you, I’d take Andrew for myself.”
“That didn’t sound like a joke.”
“Come on. If something ever happened to you, I’d take Andrew for myself.”
I nearly dropped my mug.
“Excuse me?”
She burst out laughing.
“Fine. Think of him as my backup option.”
“Your face.”
“Andrew is my husband.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t talk about taking him.”
