My Sister-in-Law Kept Asking for Mom’s Freezer After Her Funeral – Then I Found Out Why She Wanted It So Badly

If I hadn’t been watching them closely, I might have missed it.

His jaw tightened.

His voice dropped. “Vanessa.”

She looked at the floor.

And suddenly I remembered dozens of little things.

Vanessa asking permission before buying something at family dinners.

Ryan joking that she was “hopeless with money.”

Her never carrying a credit card.

The year she wanted to return to nursing school, and Ryan said childcare made it “impossible.”

None of those things had seemed frightening by themselves.

Together, they started to look different.

I said, “I promised Vanessa the freezer.”

Ryan looked annoyed.

“Fine.”

Then he walked back upstairs.

We waited until the front door shut.

Vanessa didn’t move for nearly a minute.

Finally, I took the key out. “What does this open?”

Her eyes filled. “The box.”

“What box?”

She pointed toward the loose panel.

I removed it.

Underneath was a narrow cavity someone had built between the liner and the freezer base.

Inside sat a silver metal document box wrapped in two heavy plastic bags.

I stared at it.

“Mom did this?”

“Your dad did, years ago.”

Dad had been dead for 11 years.

Apparently, he’d created the compartment to hide emergency cash because he distrusted banks after his own father lost nearly everything in a failed business.
