PAGE 5 — FINAL CLIFFHANGER / REVEAL
I couldn’t understand.
“Mara, you work for the FBI.”
“I do.”
“Then why were you helping them?”
“I wasn’t.”
“Then who were you talking to that night?”
Silence.
“What do you mean?”
Mara’s voice cracked.
“The person who called you wasn’t me.”
I stared at my phone.
The call history showed Mara’s name.
But Mara said she had never called me at 12:08.
My blood went cold.
“Then who was it?”
Before she could answer, the attic window shattered.
Everyone ducked.
The stranger pulled Caleb down.
I screamed.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
“Elise!”
Mara.
She appeared at the attic doorway.
Real.
Breathing hard.
Holding her FBI identification.
I stared at her.
“Mara?”
She nodded.
Then she looked at the three passports.
Her face changed.
“Those aren’t the identities they’re trying to erase.”
“What?”
She walked toward the hidden compartment.
“They’re the identities of the people who stole them.”
I looked at Caleb.
Then at the stranger.
Then back at Mara.
“Who are they?”
Mara looked directly at me.
And whispered,
“Your father didn’t discover the list.”
“He created it.”
I couldn’t speak.
Mara continued.
“He spent years building a record of everyone involved.”
“And before he died…”
She pointed at the folder in my hands.
“He hid the final copy where he knew only his daughter would find it.”
I looked down at my father’s signature.
Then I finally understood why Mara had called me.
Why the lights had to be turned off.
Why Caleb had been watching me.
Why the passports had our faces.
And why my father had trusted me with the truth.
The strangest part wasn’t that my husband had been living under a false name.
It wasn’t even that my sister had been investigating him for years.
It was what I found written on the very last page of my father’s file.
One sentence.
Seven words.
“Nobody noticed the second key.”
And beneath it…
Was a name I had never expected to see.
MARA.
