MY NEWLY DIVORCED NEIGHBOR TOLD ME, “I’M GOING TO TAKE YOUR HUSBAND

“Vanessa gave me these,” he’d say, setting the cookies on the counter, a little embarrassed. “I didn’t know how to say no without being rude.” And we’d laugh about it, a little uncomfortably, and I’d put the cookies in a box in the closet, unopened, because something told me — call it a wife’s instinct — to keep them. Every note, unopened, into the box. Every gift, untouched, into the box. For months, Vanessa had been building, without knowing it, the exact pile of evidence that would one day sit in a gift box in her own backyard.

She thought she was seducing my husband. She was actually just mailing me, piece by piece, the proof that she couldn’t.

Chapter 3: The Plan Only a Wife Could Make

When Vanessa threw that barbecue and invited Irvin but not me, I understood exactly what she was doing. It was a power move — a public claiming. She wanted the whole neighborhood to see my husband at her party, without his wife, as if the transfer were already underway. She wanted witnesses to her victory.

So I decided to give her witnesses. Just not to the victory she’d planned.

I did not scream. I did not confront her in a jealous rage, which is precisely what she was hoping for — the unhinged wife, the scene, the story she could tell the neighborhood about poor stable Vanessa being harassed by a hysterical woman who couldn’t keep her man. A screaming confrontation would have made me the villain and handed her the sympathy. That’s the trap, and I’ve lived long enough to see it coming.
