“Working hard?” she asked.
“Just trying to keep the car clean.”
“You know, if you ever need somebody to keep you company, I’m right next door.”
Irvin turned off the hose.
“That’s convenient. Rachel’s right inside.”
Vanessa laughed as if he’d made a joke.
“Your wife doesn’t have to know everything we talk about.”
His expression changed.
“Actually, she does if you’re suggesting that I should hide conversations with you.”
Vanessa lifted her glass.
“God, you’re serious.”
“About my marriage? Absolutely.”
She walked away, but not before looking back at him over her shoulder.
That evening, Irvin told me what had happened.
We were sitting on the sofa, sharing a bowl of popcorn, when he suddenly said, “I think Vanessa is under the impression that we’re starring in a romantic comedy, and I’m the only person who hasn’t read the script.”
I nearly choked on my popcorn.
“Perhaps you should tell her you’re not available for filming.”
