Irvin looked over at me.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Did you really plan the entire box thing because you knew it would embarrass her?”
I considered the question.
“Partly.”
He laughed.
“At least you’re honest.”
“I wanted her to understand that she couldn’t keep treating our marriage like a game. And yes, I wanted her to feel the embarrassment she had been trying to cause me.”
He nodded.
“Fair enough.”
“But I also wanted to remind myself of something.”
“What?”
“That I don’t have to compete with another woman to be worthy of my husband’s love.”
He reached for my hand.
“You never did.”
I smiled.
“I know that now.”
He kissed my knuckles.
“Good. Because I have absolutely no intention of learning how to bake cookies for another woman.”
I laughed so hard I nearly spilled my coffee.
“That’s your idea of romantic reassurance?”
“I’m a practical man.”
