“Also, I bought your favorite chocolate.”
I looked at the chocolate, then at him.
“You’re trying to stay married to me, aren’t you?”
“I’m hoping to make it to eighteen years.”
“Ambitious.”
“I’ve heard you’re difficult to replace.”
I threw a dish towel at him.
He caught it, laughing.

Chapter Six: Vanessa’s Last Attempt
For nearly two weeks, Vanessa kept her distance.
She no longer appeared in our driveway. She stopped sending messages to Irvin. When we passed each other on the street, she looked away.
I assumed she’d finally accepted the situation.
Then, on a rainy Wednesday evening, my phone rang.
Her name appeared on the screen.
I considered letting it go to voicemail, but curiosity got the better of me.
“Hello?”
“Rachel.”
Her voice was sharp.
“What do you want, Vanessa?”
“I think you owe me an apology.”
