MY NEWLY DIVORCED NEIGHBOR TOLD ME, “I’M GOING TO TAKE YOUR HUSBAND

“He doesn’t need to think about it. He is one.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Men say all sorts of things to their wives. You have no idea what he tells me when you’re not around.”

“Then tell me.”

She hesitated.

I waited.

“Go ahead,” I said. “Tell me one thing my husband has said to you that he wouldn’t say in front of me.”

For several seconds, she stood there with her mouth slightly open.

Then she lifted her chin.

“Not yet.”

I smiled.

“That’s what I thought.”

She stepped backward.

“You won’t be smiling forever, Rachel.”

“Perhaps not. But I suspect you’ll run out of reasons to threaten me before I run out of reasons to smile.”

She turned and walked away.

I watched her go, then closed the door.

My hands were shaking, but not because I feared losing Irvin.

I was angry that somebody had decided to turn my home into the setting for her personal power game.
