For the first time in years, I felt that familiar warmth in my chest.
“Dean,” I whispered, smiling through my tears.
By the end of that summer, twelve beautiful apples hung from its branches.
Only twelve.
But to me, they were priceless.
I carefully picked them and placed them on the kitchen table.
I remember touching one and laughing softly.
“You were right,” I said.
The tree had surprised me.
And it was only getting started.
The Tree Became Part of the Neighborhood
Over the following years, the tree grew stronger.
Every season, it produced more apples.
Eventually, there were far too many for me to eat alone.
So I started leaving baskets outside for the neighbors.
Children would stop by after school.
Older neighbors would come over and tell me stories.
Someone would always say, “Those are the best apples I’ve ever tasted.”
I never told them my secret.
The apples weren’t special because of the tree.
They were special because of what the tree represented.
Patience.
