“You were her doctor.”
“Yes.”
“And now you stand to inherit money.”
“I refused it.”
“After I complained.”
I felt my face grow hot, but I forced myself to remain seated.
“I can’t prove what I knew before the wedding except by telling the truth and providing the timeline. I understand why you suspect me. But you also know that you helped arrange the ceremony.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Are you blaming me?”
“No. I’m saying you know what happened that day. You know what we discussed, and you know I never spoke to you about an inheritance.”
She pushed the box away.
“I thought I was giving Alicia something beautiful. I thought you were doing it for her. Then I found out about the money, and suddenly I didn’t know what to believe.”
Her voice broke.
“She was my sister. I was supposed to protect her.”
I looked at the scarf.
