I sent it to the review panel.
Two days later, Nora posted a photograph from the wedding.
It showed me standing beside Alicia’s bed, wearing my dark suit. Alicia was smiling beneath her white scarf, her bandage ring visible on her hand.
Nora’s caption read:
This doctor married my dying sister. After her death, we discovered she had left him a large inheritance. I believe he exploited her vulnerability, and I am asking the hospital to investigate.
The photograph spread quickly.
People who had never met Alicia began discussing her motives.
Some called me a predator.
Others said that a dying woman should be allowed to make her own decisions.
Several people insisted that refusing the money proved I had done nothing wrong.
Others argued that refusing it only after the inheritance became public proved the opposite.
My phone filled with messages.
A former professor who had written one of my medical-school recommendations contacted me directly.
