“Lucas, we need to talk.”
She held out her hand.
“Your patients have been reassigned. I need your badge.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Your marriage to Alicia Morgan has been reported. The inheritance raises additional concerns, and we need to review what happened.”
“I transferred her care before the wedding.”
“That was appropriate, but it does not resolve the issue.”
“I didn’t know about the money.”
“That may be true. The review will determine what the evidence supports.”
She looked at me with an expression I had never seen on her face before.
“Marrying a patient is a serious professional boundary violation, Lucas. You cannot turn an inappropriate decision into an appropriate one simply because your intentions were compassionate.”
I felt the words land harder than I expected.
“Am I losing my job?”
“I don’t know yet.”
She held out her hand again.
I unclipped my badge and placed it in her palm.
