My mother-in-law tore my dress in half in my own kitchen in front of twenty people and shouted that her son had paid for everything in it. Then I put my phone down on the counter and let it run.

Not one of them said anything. Including my own sister, who has apologised twice and who I have forgiven.

And she was closer to the truth than she knew.

Because for three years her son had been paying for things in that house — with about six hundred and ten thousand dollars of mine, routed through her brother, on a signature I gave him myself because I did not want to embarrass him.
