My mother-in-law slapped my two-year-old daughter across the face at her own birthday banquet, called my little girl “defective,” and my husband just sat there. Minutes later, his glasses were floating in a bowl of stew, his mother was buried face-first in her birthday cake, and I was walking out with my child, but none of them knew I’d spent the past month preparing for the exact moment my husband finally chose his mother over his daughter

That was when I knew my marriage had just ended.

Not legally.

Not yet.

But the thing I had been desperately trying to preserve for the past four years disappeared between one heartbeat and the next.

I kissed Fiona’s hair.

Then I reached across the table, took Luca’s glasses from his face, and dropped them into the serving bowl of beef stew.

They vanished beneath the brown broth with a tiny splash.

The room gasped.

Luca shot to his feet.

“Jessica!”

Wendy screamed, “Have you lost your mind?”

I turned toward her.

Perhaps I had.

Or perhaps, for the first time in years, I had finally found it.

Wendy leaned toward me, still shouting.

I put one hand against the back of her head.

And pushed.

Her face disappeared into her birthday cake.

Candles toppled.

Red frosting exploded across the white tablecloth.

Someone screamed.

Someone else laughed before choking it back.

Wendy came upright sputtering, frosting hanging from her eyelashes and pearls.

“You psychotic—”

“Touch my child again,” I said quietly, “and cake will be the nicest thing that happens to you.”

Then I picked up Fiona’s rabbit.

I took my daughter.

And I walked out.

Behind me, Wendy was screaming through a mouthful of frosting.
