I stared at that fact until it seemed bigger than every message combined.
I typed:
The wrong idea is that this was the first time you failed her.
My thumb hovered over Send.
Before I could press it, another notification appeared.
Kelly Moretti.
Luca’s cousin.
Kelly had been sitting across the table during dinner.
She was twenty-eight, quieter than most of Luca’s family, with dark curly hair and the habit of noticing things other people ignored.
Her message contained a video.
And one sentence.
Jessi, I think you need to see the whole video.
I sat up.
The room was dark except for my phone.
Fiona breathed softly beside me.
I plugged in headphones.
Pressed play.
The video began with Wendy’s cake.
Guests were singing.
Kelly’s camera moved from face to face.
Wendy smiled grandly.
Luca clapped.
Fiona was beside my chair.
Nothing unusual.
Then the singing stopped.
The video continued.
Kelly must have forgotten to stop recording.
The camera dropped slightly toward the table.
The picture showed mostly plates and glasses.
But the audio was clear.
Wendy’s voice.
“She’s doing it again.”
Luca answered softly.
“Mom.”
“That staring thing.”
“She’s tired.”
“I’m telling you, something is wrong with that child.”
