My Mother-in-Law Invited 20 and kertati Extra Guests to Thanksgiving – She Didn’t Know I Had Changed One Small Detail

Harley had laughed from the hallway, the way he always laughed.

“Just let her have this one day, babe. It’s easier.”

Easier. That word had lived rent-free in my marriage for almost a decade.

Then, standing in the kitchen, I heard him murmuring into his phone.

I froze with a place card in my hand and listened.

“Mom, she’s got it handled. Yeah. Yeah, I know.”

There was a pause. Then his voice dropped lower.

“Mom, she doesn’t need to know every little thing.”

I set the place card down very slowly.

Harley walked in a moment later, phone tucked into his back pocket, and kissed the top of my head as if nothing had happened.

“The table looks nice, Madison.”

“Thank you.”

He didn’t hear the tone of my voice. He never did.

I moved to the sideboard and counted the plates again. Twelve. Enough for us, my parents, his aunt and uncle, Ryan and his girlfriend, and the two neighbors we always included.

I had counted them three times this week already, but counting steadied me the way other people used prayer.

Harley leaned against the doorframe, watching.

“You’ve been at this for weeks.”

“I like it done right.”
