MY MOM STARTED CHARGING ME $40 EVERY TIME SHE BABYSAT MY SON, IN CASH, AND I WAS FURIOUS.
THEN SHE SAID SHE COULDN’T STOP — AND WHAT SHE’D REALLY BEEN DOING WITH THE MONEY MADE MY KNEES GO WEAK.
Chapter 1: The Grandmother Who Suddenly Charged
My mom started charging me $40 every time she babysat my son — I was furious, until I found out what the money was really for.
My name is Claire. My mom watched my son Caleb for free his whole life — she’d get offended if we hired a sitter. “What am I, a stranger?” Then, at sixty-six, she suddenly started charging $60 a visit. Always cash. Always exactly forty.
Nothing made sense. Her house is paid off; she rinses out Ziploc bags to reuse them. But every visit, four hours or ninety minutes, she stood at the door waiting for her forty dollars.
I got resentful. I told her I’d rather pay a real sitter, and for three weeks we didn’t bring Caleb at all. She noticed. She called. “Please don’t stop bringing him because of the money.”
“Then stop charging us.”then.
“I can’t,” she said. Not “I won’t.” I can’t.
And when I asked what she meant, her answer made me go pale.
