I believed that he was struggling to find an answer.
But I no longer believed that his confusion was my responsibility to resolve.
“I have spent months wondering what I did wrong,” I told him. “I thought perhaps I had become boring. Perhaps I had stopped paying attention to you. Perhaps I had allowed the children and the house to consume too much of our time.”
He looked up.
“Debra, this wasn’t your fault.”
“Then why did you let me believe it might be?”
He had no answer.
I continued.
“I can accept that people change. I can accept that a marriage can reach a point where two people no longer want the same things. What I cannot accept is being kept in the dark while you make plans about my future.”
He nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
“No, Tyler. You’re beginning to understand what you stand to lose. That isn’t the same thing.”
