He closed his eyes.
“I don’t have an answer.”
For once, I believed him.
Not because he was being honest about everything, but because he finally seemed to understand that there was no explanation capable of making his choices harmless.
He had wanted the excitement of a new relationship without losing the security of his old one.
He had wanted Rachel to believe she was his future while allowing me to believe I was still his wife in every meaningful sense.
He had wanted both women to trust him, even though he had given neither of us the truth.
And now the two versions of his life had collided.
“Is the baby yours?” I asked.
He looked up sharply.
“Rachel says it is.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
He swallowed.
“I believe it is.”
“Have you discussed a paternity test?”
“No.”
“Then that is something you will need to address appropriately, with professional guidance and without using the question to threaten or punish her.”
