Rachel interrupted.
“With all due respect, Debra, this isn’t about the past. We have to think about the future.”
I turned toward her.
“Then let’s talk about the future. Where do you plan to live if this house isn’t available?”
She stared at me.
“I beg your pardon?”
“You heard me. If you and Tyler cannot live here, what is your plan?”
She looked at Tyler.
He didn’t answer.
For the first time, I noticed something that had escaped me earlier.
Rachel was confident when she believed she was speaking for Tyler.
But whenever the conversation required him to make a concrete commitment, she watched his face before responding.
It was a small detail.
Still, I filed it away.
“Tyler told me he would take care of everything,” she said.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“And did he tell you how?”
Her expression tightened.
“Why are you doing this?”
“I’m asking a question.”
