He had sent his pregnant mistress to do the work for him.
I felt the first real wave of anger rise inside me.
But I kept my voice steady.
“Explain what, exactly?”
Rachel placed her handbag on the small table near the entrance.
“The baby will need a proper home. Tyler and I have talked about it, and we both agree that this house would be ideal.”
For a moment, I wondered whether I had misunderstood her.
Then she continued.
“There’s a yard. The neighborhood is safe. The bedrooms are large enough, and the schools are excellent. You don’t need all this space anymore, especially with your children away at college.”
I stared at her.
She spoke as though we were discussing a piece of furniture I no longer needed.
“You want my house?”
“I think it’s the most practical solution.”
“Practical for whom?”
“For everyone.”
She said it with such confidence that I almost admired the audacity.
