Robert looked tired.
His shirt was wrinkled, and he had dark circles beneath his eyes.
“Margaret, can I come in?”
“Why?”
He looked surprised.
“Because this is my home too.”
“Not according to the way you’ve been behaving.”
He exhaled sharply.
“I know you’re angry.”
“I’m beyond angry, Robert. I’m trying to understand what happened to the man I married.”
He lowered his eyes.
“Things got out of control.”
“Which things?”
He looked up.
“The investment. The loan. Everything.”
I stood aside but did not invite him to sit.
“Tell me the truth.”
He ran a hand through his hair.
“The development was supposed to make money. I believed it would. When the first payments were delayed, I tried to find another way to cover the shortfall.”
“By using Lisa’s savings?”
“I never forced her to invest.”
“Did you explain the risks?”
He didn’t answer.
“Did you tell her that the companies you named weren’t all confirmed investors?”
