“I know.”
“You sent me photographs to hurt me.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
She opened the envelope with trembling hands.
“Because Robert has destroyed my daughter’s life, and I don’t know who else can help me.”
I stared at her.
“What happened to your daughter?”
“Her name is Lisa. She’s forty years old. She owns a small bakery, and it’s the only thing she’s ever wanted. Robert convinced her to invest in a business deal. He promised her that it would secure her future.”
Susan began crying harder.
“Now the business is collapsing, the bank is demanding money, and Robert has disappeared. Lisa could lose everything.”
I felt a chill move through me.
“Why would Robert involve your daughter in his business?”
“Because he said he wanted to help us build a future together.”
She looked up at me.
“He told me that once his divorce was finalized, we would start a new life. He said Lisa could expand her bakery, and we would never have to worry about money again.”
