“Can I use your computer?”
Mara’s expression tightened. “You can.”
Rachel sat for the first time.
The chair gave a faint metallic squeak under her. Her knees felt unreliable now that she had allowed them to bend. Mara moved to the other side of the desk but remained standing.
Rachel turned the drive between her fingers.
“What if there’s something on here I don’t want you to see?”
“I can leave.”
“What if I need you?”
“I’ll be outside.”
Rachel looked at her.
Mara waited.
Rachel shook her head. “Stay.”
Mara came around beside her.
Rachel inserted the drive.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then a folder opened automatically.
There were no neatly labeled documents.
No explanation.
Only files.
Photographs.
A few videos.
Several images that looked like screenshots of text messages.
Rachel’s fingers hovered above the trackpad.
The first photograph showed a parking lot at night.
