“No.”
Rachel looked down at the envelope again.
Anger surged because it was easier than fear.
“You should have called me.”
“Yes,” Mara said.
The immediate agreement took the wind out of Rachel.
Mara continued, quieter. “I should have. But I had a girl standing in this room shaking so hard she knocked a pen cup off my desk, telling me that if the wrong person found out she had left something here, everything would get worse.”
Rachel’s fingers stopped on the flap.
“The wrong person.”
“She wouldn’t give me a name.”
“Did she look afraid of Derek?”
Mara hesitated.
Rachel stepped closer. “Mara.”
“I saw him through the lobby window once while she was here.”
“When?”
“The night she asked about the camera footage.”
Rachel waited.
“She saw him pull into the lot,” Mara said. “She moved away from the window so quickly she hit the wall.”
