His pleasant expression vanished instantly.
“Don’t be ridiculous. It’s for the company.”
“Then show me the vendor contract, the detailed ledger, and exactly where the money will be deposited.”
His face turned red.
“You always have to control everything!”
“Half this house belongs to me. Without my signature, no bank can touch it.”
He slammed his hand onto the counter.
“Then you can sign divorce papers Monday! I’ll give you a small settlement, and you can leave!”
I looked straight at him.
“With what money, Mark?”
He froze.
“Your corporate banking authority was canceled yesterday.”
The color disappeared from his face.
“What did you do?”
“What I should have done months ago. I audited the company my father and I helped build.”
Mark backed out of the room without another word.
That night, I found a draft divorce agreement hidden inside his desk.
Beside it was a glossy brochure for a luxury retirement community in Florida.
Ofelia had circled an expensive corner suite with a balcony.
The required deposit was one hundred thousand dollars.
Minutes later, Andrew sent me a wire receipt.
Brenda had transferred exactly one hundred thousand dollars to Ofelia’s account two weeks earlier.
Sunday arrived.
Our dining table was covered with expensive food, wine, and catered desserts.
Ofelia proudly announced that everything was meant to celebrate “a fresh chapter.”
Julian arrived with his wife.
Margaret came shortly afterward.
Mark barely spoke.
He checked his phone every thirty seconds.
Ofelia sat at the head of the table like a queen.
“Thank you all for coming,” she announced. “Today I want to formally share that Mark and Laura are separating. My son deserves someone who suits his executive position. Laura’s time in this family is over.”
Julian frowned.
“Laura built that company right beside Mark.”
Ofelia waved him off.
“Mark has found someone younger and far more capable.”
The doorbell rang.
Ofelia gestured toward me.
“Laura, answer that. Tell whoever it is that this is a private family discussion.”
I stood.
“I can’t do that.”
Mark dropped his fork.
