Part 3 — What My Mother Had Been Hiding
I stared at the tiny memory card sitting in my mother’s trembling hand.
“What’s on it?”
Rose looked toward the windows.
Mark was still outside.
“He can’t know I kept this.”
My stomach tightened.
“Mom, what did you record?”
She took a shaky breath.
“I didn’t know how else to make anyone believe me.”
Then she told me something that made my heart break.
For almost two months, she had been secretly recording what happened inside our house.
She had hidden a small camera inside an old digital picture frame in the kitchen.
Eleanor never suspected it.
Rose had positioned it so it could capture the corner of the kitchen where most of the abuse happened.
“You were always so far away,” she whispered. “And whenever you called, they acted so nice.”
I could barely speak.
My mother had been suffering in silence while I was hundreds of miles away believing she was safe.
That night, after Noah and Lily finally fell asleep, I sat beside Rose on the couch.
She had an ice pack against her swollen hands.
I inserted the memory card into my laptop.
The first video began.
At first, I thought maybe I was prepared for what I would see.
I wasn’t.
Eleanor was standing over my mother, ordering her to scrub the floor.
Rose was on her knees.
Her hands were swollen.
Her movements were painfully slow.
Eleanor mocked her for taking too long.
Then came another recording.
Mark was there.
He saw what his mother was doing.
He knew my mother was sick.
He knew she was hurting.
And he did nothing.
Sometimes he even laughed.
I covered my mouth.
But then another video started.
It showed Eleanor grabbing Rose’s wrist.
The same wrist covered in bruises when I came home.
Rose tried to pull away.
Mark stood nearby.
He watched.
He said nothing.
Then came the recording that nearly destroyed me.
Dinner had been served fifteen minutes late.
Eleanor became furious.
She turned toward my mother.
And struck her across the face.
I stopped the video.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Rose sat beside me silently.
I looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She lowered her eyes.
“Because I knew you’d come home angry. And I was afraid they would destroy the evidence before anyone believed me.”
I watched the video again.
Then again.
The second time, I started taking notes.
Dates.
Times.
Names.
Everything.
I wasn’t going to scream at Mark.
I wasn’t going to confront Eleanor.
Not anymore.
I was going to make sure they could never hurt my mother again.
The next morning, I called an elder-law attorney.
Then I contacted a detective who specialized in domestic and elder abuse cases.
I gave them everything.
The recordings.
The timestamps.
My mother’s medical records.
Everything.
And when the detective watched the footage, he told me something I will never forget.
The evidence was strong enough to potentially support a protective order and criminal charges.
For the first time in months, Rose looked like she could finally breathe.
But Mark wasn’t finished.
He called me again.
And again.
For three straight days.
At first, he apologized.
Then he demanded to know how I had bought the mansion.
That told me everything I needed to know.
Even after what he had done, his biggest concern wasn’t Rose.
It wasn’t the children.
It wasn’t our marriage.
It was money.
And soon, he would discover just how little power he actually had over me.
