Michael stared at the photograph.
It showed Jonathan standing beside a young woman.
Esther recognized the woman immediately.

Michael looked at her.

Esther took the photograph with shaking hands.

But that is me.
Michael’s mother closed her eyes.
I knew this day would come.
Michael turned toward her.

His mother pointed at the photograph.

Michael looked at Esther.
She was wearing a dress she remembered from college.
She had been younger.
But the man standing beside her was not Jonathan.

Esther stared at the face.
I know him.
Who?
His name was David.
Michael’s face went pale.

His mother nodded.

Michael stepped backward.
But David died before I was born.
