Then I remembered my mother’s words.
Never let anyone convince you that love means giving up your right to protect yourself.
I straightened in my chair.
“You’re right about one thing, Sean. We built a life together. That’s why I won’t let you destroy it by making me responsible for something I didn’t authorize.”
He laughed bitterly.
“And what are you going to do? Call a lawyer? Go to the police? Tell everyone your husband made a bad investment?”
“I’ve already spoken to an attorney. And I’ve arranged a meeting with the bank’s fraud department.”
His expression changed.
Only slightly, but I saw it.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely uncertain.
Nancy grabbed her bag.
“We need to go.”
Alex didn’t move.
“No. We’re not leaving until I understand what you did.”
She turned to him.
“Alex, please. Not here.”
“Where, then? In our kitchen, after you’ve had another opportunity to prepare your story?”
