“Protection from what?”
“From the people whose money he was moving.”
I felt my mouth go dry.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I found out what the second stage involved.”
I gripped the phone.
“What was it?”
He hesitated.
“Claire, I don’t think Richard understood all of it when he signed the documents. I think he believed he could take the money, leave the country, and start again.”
“And Sophie?”
“I don’t know everything. But Adrian wanted control of the trust documents, and he wanted Richard to keep Vesna close until the transfers were finished.”
“Why?”
“Because if anyone questioned the money, Vesna’s company would appear to be responsible.”
I closed my eyes.
The same plan I had suspected from the beginning.
A woman whose name appeared on the documents.
A wife whose house could be used to establish an address.
A baby whose name had been inserted into a financial arrangement.
