“Did you speak to him?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
She was silent for a moment.
“That I had no idea what I was protecting Sophie from.”
I closed my eyes.
“Did he threaten you?”
“He said that if I gave the documents to the authorities, people would come looking for the baby.”
My voice hardened.
“Did you tell the investigators?”
“Yes. My attorney reported it immediately.”
“Good. Don’t go anywhere without the safety arrangements they have given you.”
She began crying again.
“I wanted to believe he loved her.”
I had no answer for that.
Because perhaps Richard had loved Sophie in the only way he knew how.
But whatever he felt, it had not stopped him from placing her in the middle of a dangerous arrangement.
And that was enough.
Chapter 7: The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable
The next week, the investigation moved quickly.
The financial records showed that Richard had helped move money through several companies, concealing the people who ultimately controlled them. Some transactions appeared to be legitimate business expenses. Others had no clear commercial purpose.
