Inside were three printed emails, a photograph of a signed document, and a handwritten note.
The emails showed Richard discussing a payment scheduled for the following Monday.
The amount was $420,000.
The recipient was a company I had never heard of.
But the last email was from Richard himself.
Once the transfer clears, the original records must be destroyed. Vesna will retain the remaining balance until the second stage is complete. If anyone asks, she acted independently.
I read the message twice.
Then I looked at Vesna.
“Did you write this?”
“No.”
“Did you know about the transfer?”
“No. I found the emails when I tried to print a receipt for the baby supplies. His account was still open on the laptop he gave me.”
She wiped her cheeks.
“I confronted him about it yesterday. He said it was a routine business transaction. Then he told me not to worry because you would be taking care of us.”
