My husband mocked my part-time cleaning job in front of his friends — then his boss knocked on our door.

My stomach dropped.

“What is that?”

Mr. Harrison looked at me.

“This is one of the reasons I came tonight.”

Mark immediately stepped forward.

“Linda, don’t listen to him.”

I stared at my husband.

“Why?”

He didn’t answer.

“Why shouldn’t I listen?”

“Because you don’t understand what this is.”

I almost laughed.

That was always his answer.

You don’t understand.

Mr. Harrison looked at me.

“Linda, your husband used your signature on documents that transferred liability to you.”

My mouth went dry.

“What?”

Mark shook his head.

“That’s not true.”

Mr. Harrison continued.

“Several payments were routed through a company connected to a former business associate. That company later transferred funds into another account.”

Mark said nothing.

“And one of the documents made it appear that Linda Carter had authorized a portion of the transactions.”

I looked at Mark.

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

For twenty-seven years, I had defended this man.

For twenty-seven years, I had believed that whatever happened, we were a team.

But suddenly I understood.

He hadn’t simply hidden money.

He had put my name in front of it.

He had been willing to let me carry the blame.

One of Mark’s coworkers stood.

“Mark…”

Mark snapped.
