I refused to let the matter disappear behind another promise.

If Tom wanted to repair his relationship with his sister and nephew, he would have to do it through accountability, not charm.

Our marriage entered a period of separation.

We attended counseling, but I made it clear that reconciliation wasn’t guaranteed. Trust couldn’t be demanded simply because we had once loved each other.

Tom had to confront the financial decisions he had hidden for years.

I had to confront my own choices and the emotional distance I had allowed to grow between us.

Neither of us could blame everything on the other.

As for Jake, he began college and eventually found his footing. He called occasionally to update us about his classes, but our conversations became shorter and more appropriate.

We didn’t make promises about a future together.

We didn’t turn a painful mistake into a romantic story about two people who were supposedly meant to find each other.
