By evening, Tom returned home.
He placed his keys on the counter and stood across from me.
“Melissa called me,” he said.
I nodded.
“I assumed she would.”
He looked exhausted.
“She wants the money accounted for. She’s spoken to a lawyer.”
“Then you need to cooperate.”
He stared at me.
“You’re taking her side?”
“I’m taking the side of the truth.”
He looked away.
For a moment, I thought he would argue.
Instead, he sat down.
“I made mistakes,” he said quietly.
“Yes.”
“I thought I could fix everything once I was successful enough.”
“And did you?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
I sat opposite him.
“Tom, I can’t decide what happens to our marriage tonight. I don’t even know what I want yet. But I know I can’t continue living in a relationship where the truth only comes out when someone discovers a document.”
He nodded slowly.
“And what about Jake?”
