“After he died, she trusted Uncle Tom to help her manage some of the financial paperwork. Tom had experience with property and investments. He told her he could help her make the money last.”
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“What happened?”
“According to my mother, the money disappeared. She believed it had been lost in an investment that went bad. Tom promised to repay what was missing, but she says he never did.”
I looked back at the letter.
The words seemed to shift before my eyes.
Tom had never told me anything about this.
Not once.
Jake continued.
“My mother kept asking questions. They fought about it for years. Eventually, she moved away because she couldn’t stand being around him anymore.”
“Why didn’t she tell you?”
“She wanted to protect me. And she didn’t have enough proof to challenge him.”
He pointed to the documents.
“Then she found an old folder while cleaning out a storage unit. These were inside it.”
