Inside was a photocopy of an old letter.
The paper had been folded several times, and the handwriting was unmistakably familiar.
It belonged to Tom.
I looked up.
“Why do you have a letter from my husband?”
Jake took a deep breath.
“Because there’s something about Uncle Tom that I think you need to know.”
The Secret Jake Had Been Keeping
I sat down slowly.
“What are you talking about?”
Jake rubbed his palms against his jeans.
“My mother sent this to me two days ago. She said I was old enough to know the truth.”
I unfolded the letter.
The date was from seven years earlier, long before Tom and I had been married.
The message was short, but one sentence made my stomach tighten.
Sarah doesn’t know what happened, and I intend to keep it that way. I made a promise, and I won’t let the past destroy what I’ve built.
