“Yes.”
“You knew more than Lily did.”
His voice broke.
“Yes.”
That hurt almost as much as seeing Carl’s handwriting.
Because thirteen years earlier, when one man walked out of my life, my father had become the person I trusted to stay.
Now I was discovering that the man who stayed had been carrying the secrets of the man who left.
And suddenly, I was grieving something new.
Part 2 — The Day Our Family Broke in Half
Emily and Lily were five when Emily died.
There had been no long illness.
No months of preparing ourselves.
No time to say goodbye properly.
That morning, she had been arguing with Lily about crayons.
By afternoon, she was gone.
She had come into the kitchen and pressed one hand against her chest.
“Mommy, it feels funny.”
I remember kneeling in front of her.
“What feels funny, sweetheart?”
She couldn’t explain.
Children rarely can.
Within an hour, paramedics were in our house.
Carl picked Lily up and carried her into the bedroom because she was crying and trying to follow the stretcher.
I rode with Emily.
Everything after that exists in fragments.
Bright hospital lights.
A nurse touching my shoulder.
Someone asking me to sit.
