So I hired a property attorney.
The results were worse than I expected.
The house wasn’t simply connected to Claire.
There was another name on the documents.
A company.
A company Mark had never mentioned.
And that company had been transferring money every month.
Not to Claire.
To Mark.
I handed Claire her envelope.
She opened it.
Her eyes widened.
“What’s this?”
I said,
“Bank records.”
She looked at Mark.
“You told me you were broke.”
Mark didn’t answer.
Claire’s voice trembled.
“You told me you couldn’t help me anymore.”
Mark remained silent.
She looked back at the papers.
“These transfers…”
I nodded.
“Your ex-husband has been receiving money from the company that owns part of this property.”
Claire stared at him.
“How long?”
Mark finally spoke.
“Six months.”
“Why?”
He didn’t answer.
I did.
“Because Mark has been selling pieces of the property without telling either of us.”
Everyone at the table gasped.
