“I know what it is, Julian,” I said.
My calm terrified him more than a blade would have.
I pulled my cell phone from my coat pocket and tapped a single speed-dial contact.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed into slits. “Who are you calling?”
“Mr. Harlan,” I answered.
Julian went bloodless. Margaret actually stopped breathing. The woman in the robe looked bewilderedly between the two of them.
The call connected on the second ring.
“Mrs. Vance?” an elderly, patrician voice answered.
“I am home, Mr. Harlan,” I said evenly. “And I have witnessed what we anticipated.”
A heavy sigh came across the line. “Under the terms of the Benton Living Trust, established by your father prior to your union, residential tenancy within the Richmond property is contingent upon strict adherence to the marital covenant. Any documented infidelity within the premises triggers immediate forfeiture of all spousal occupancy rights.”
“Activate the forfeiture,” I said.
“Security teams and process servers are already en route,” Harlan replied. “Furthermore, Mrs. Vance… the county registrar’s office flagged an amendment filed yesterday on your daughter’s birth certificate.”
My blood went cold. “What amendment?”
“Julian Vance did not register himself as the father,” Harlan said, his voice tightening. “He listed a deceased man. **Nathaniel Cole**.”
