My husband ignored 17 calls while I endured labor alone. Five days later, I took a cab home with our newborn, only to find red bottoms on our stairs and another woman in our bed—wearing my robe. My mother-in-law sneered, “Keep quiet and don’t make a scene.” I didn’t yell. I gently laid my baby down, dialed a single direct line, and put it on speaker. The moment a powerful voice answered with their arrest warrant, every ounce of color drained from their faces

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the rear gardens.

Agent Reyes’s radio erupted:

*”Officer down on the east terrace! Margaret Vance broke a sitting-room window! She’s into the grounds!”*

Before anyone could move, my personal phone on the mahogany desk began to ring.

The screen illuminated: *Unknown Caller.*

I picked it up.

Margaret’s voice, cold, breathless, and laced with cyanide, cut through the speaker:

*”Evelyn. Walk out to the glass greenhouse at the edge of the rose garden. Bring Cora. If you bring a single badge with you, I swear on my husband’s grave, you will never know the truth about Daniel Mercer.”*

Chapter 4: The Greenhouse and the Missing Child

The winter rain had turned the gardens into a sea of black mud.

I refused to take Cora into the storm. I walked into the study, looked at our family attorney, **Daniel Mercer**, who had arrived with the federal warrants, and placed my five-day-old child into his arms.

“Keep her safe, Daniel,” I whispered, my voice shaking with maternal ferocity. “Do not let her out of your sight.”

“With my life, Evelyn,” Daniel promised, his dark eyes solemn as he held the infant against his wool coat.
