MY HUSBAND HAD BARELY BEEN BURIED WHEN HIS PARENTS THREW ME AND OUR SIX CHILDREN OUT INTO THE RAIN… BUT THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHAT MY HUSBAND HAD LEFT BEHIND.

PAGE 9

The following afternoon, the doors to the Vance estate opened.

But not for Harold.

Two sheriff’s deputies stood on the porch.

Arthur Bell stood between them.

And behind them was Mara.

She wore a black coat.

Her six children stood beside her.

Dry.

Warm.

Together.

The neighbors had gathered again.

The same neighbors who had watched Mara leave.

The same people who had whispered behind curtains.

Now they watched her return.

Harold came outside.

His face was red with anger.

“What is the meaning of this?”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Mr. Vance, you have been formally notified.”

“This is my house!”

“No.”

Arthur opened his briefcase.

“It isn’t.”

Harold pointed at Mara.

“She has no right to be here.”

Arthur handed him a document.

“Actually, she has every right.”

Harold read it.

His face changed.

Celeste rushed outside.

“What does it say?”

Harold couldn’t answer.

Arthur spoke.

“As of four months ago, Mrs. Mara Vance became the lawful owner of this property.”

Celeste grabbed the papers.

“No.”

She read them.

“No, no, no.”

“This is impossible.”

Arthur remained calm.

“It was properly executed, notarized, and recorded.”

Harold shook his head.

“My son would never do this.”

Mara finally spoke.

“He did.”

Harold looked at her.

“You manipulated him.”

“No.”

“You turned him against his family.”

Mara took a step forward.

“He knew you.”

Harold’s face tightened.

Arthur continued.

“You are also being served with an eviction order.”

Harold stared at him.

“You can’t evict me from my own home!”

Arthur looked at the mansion.

“It’s not your home.”

Harold’s confidence disappeared.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

Mara remembered the previous day.

She remembered Lily’s fever.

Noah’s bruised cheek.

Her children carrying plastic bags through the rain.

She remembered Harold’s words.

You should be grateful we’re letting you leave with anything.

Mara looked him directly in the eyes.

Then she said:

“You should be grateful if I let you pack anything at all.”

The neighbors went completely silent.

Celeste began crying.

Harold looked stunned.

For years, everyone had believed the Vances controlled everything.

Money.

Property.

Reputation.

Power.

But in a single afternoon, it had all changed.

The deputies escorted Harold and Celeste from the porch.

Mara watched them walk toward the same iron gates through which she had been forced to leave.

This time, she wasn’t the one being pushed out.

Noah took his mother’s hand.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Are we really home?”

Mara looked at the mansion.

Then she looked at her children.

“Yes.”

They walked through the front doors.

For the first time in months, Mara felt something she thought she had lost forever.

Peace.

But then she noticed something.

The door to Richard’s study was slightly open.

Mara stopped.
