My husband forced me to sleep in our car every night because my pregnancy kept him awake,

I took pictures of everything.

Looking back at those photographs became unbearable after the nights in the car began.

I kept asking myself where that man had gone.

The change didn’t happen all at once.

It began when I entered my second trimester and Ryan was promoted.

His responsibilities increased, his working hours grew longer, and his supervisor started assigning him projects that had previously gone to senior managers.

At first, I was proud of him.

Then the late nights became normal.

He stopped asking about my doctor’s appointments.

He complained about the cost of prenatal vitamins.

He began referring to the baby as “the expense” when he thought I wasn’t listening.

One evening, I found him staring at a spreadsheet on his laptop.

“What are you working on?”

I asked.

“Budget projections.”

“For work?”

He closed the laptop.

“Does it matter?”

I sat beside him.

“You seem stressed.”
