I turned the photograph over.
There was a date written on the back.
October 14.
I froze.
That was the day before Liam died.
I looked at Marcus.
“Who is this man?”
He said nothing.
“Marcus.”
Still nothing.
I held up the photograph.
“Who is he?”
Marcus finally looked at me.
Then he said quietly:
“Ask your sister.”
Before I could answer, someone knocked on the office door.
Three times.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Marcus’s face changed.
He looked genuinely frightened.
“Who’s there?” he called.
A woman’s voice answered from the other side.
“Marcus?”
My heart started pounding.
It was Sarah.
I moved toward the door.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.”
I pulled away.
“She’s my sister.”
“And that’s exactly why you shouldn’t open that door.”
I stared at him.
For the first time, I wasn’t sure which man I was supposed to be afraid of.
Sarah knocked again.
“Emily?”
I looked at Marcus.
“How does she know I’m here?”
He didn’t answer.
The silence told me everything.
Someone had told her.
But who?
I walked to the door.
Marcus whispered behind me.
“If you open that door, there is no going back.”
I put my hand on the handle.
Then I heard Sarah’s voice again.
