A detective named Marcus Hale came in carrying a folder.
He didn’t sit immediately.
Instead, he placed the folder on the table.
“We’ve been going through your husband’s financial records.”
My throat tightened.
“What did you find?”
He opened the folder.
“Your husband had taken out several large life-insurance policies.”
I stared at him.
“On me?”
He nodded.
“And on Noah.”
My blood went cold.
“How much?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Enough that someone could completely change their life.”
I looked toward my sleeping son.
“How long?”
“Almost eighteen months.”
That didn’t make sense.
For eighteen months, Daniel had kissed me goodnight.
He had helped Noah with homework.
He had complained about grocery prices.
He had hugged me before leaving for work.
All while secretly arranging for us to die.
But Marcus wasn’t finished.
“There is something else.”
He removed another document.
“Your husband wasn’t planning to leave the country after your deaths.”
“Then where was he going?”
“He was planning to disappear.”
He slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Daniel standing beside a woman I had never seen before.
My hands became cold.
“Who is she?”
“We’re still investigating,” Marcus said. “But she has been receiving money from your husband for more than a year.”
