She’s the woman my husband was holding on our anniversary.”
“She’s his sister.”
I went completely still.
“Nathan doesn’t have a sister.”
“He does.
She was adopted out of the family when she was four years old.
She only found them eight months ago.”
The floor felt like it was shifting under me.
“That night — the restaurant, his mother — they were meeting her for the first time.”
I couldn’t speak.
“He was going to tell you everything that same night.
But when he came home and saw your face, he panicked.”
I looked down the hallway at Nathan.
He was watching me.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just waiting.
My lawyer held up the envelope.
“She brought proof.
Birth records.
Family documents.
Everything.”
My throat tightened.
“Why didn’t he just tell me?”
My lawyer was quiet for a moment.
Then he said the one thing I wasn’t ready to hear.
“Because she also brought something else.
Something about your marriage that Nathan has been trying to protect you from for two years.”
I looked at my lawyer.
“What do you mean, protecting me from something?”
“I think you need to hear this from Nathan directly.” He glanced toward the far end of the hallway.
